Optical Communications: A Glance Back, then a Focus on Now and the Future

Presented by Dr. Stan Lumish, JDSU

Optical Communications has revolutionized the foundations of the global telecommunications infrastructure. It has changed forever the way we think about communicating over long distances. Numerous market and competitive forces, along with technological innovation, joined together to drive the extensive deployment of a fiber optics infrastructure in North America in the 1980’s. These forces have continued to press forward, until today, where capacities of hundreds of gigabits per second of data, representing tens of millions of phone calls, are transmitted over thousands of kilometers. These achievements, looking back, are breathtaking in scope, and have been enabled by innovations in many fields. With the benefits of bandwidth transport via fiber optics well established, the next steps of optical or wavelength networking are beginning, but are in their infancy. Looking ahead, the insatiable hunger for bandwidth, fed by such things as Internet TV, HDTV, video on demand, remote medicine and others, will continue and lead to new challenges in optical communications. In this presentation, particular attention will be paid to technological advances and the role coatings have played to make this revolution possible.

Dr. Stan Lumish is the Chief Technology Officer for JDSU and is responsible for the Company’s overall technology strategy for its communications, commercial, and consumer markets. Prior to this, he was CTO for the communications business. Previously, Dr. Lumish managed the Optical Layer Products Group. He joined JDSU in February 2000 to lead R&D for Network Product Applications and, subsequently, for the Transmission Subsystems Group and the Optical Networks Research group. Prior to JDSU, Dr. Lumish held management positions with Lucent, where he received the Bell Labs Fellow award. Dr. Lumish holds B.E., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, all in Electrical Engineering, from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is a member of a number of engineering honor societies (Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu and Sigma Xi) and is a senior member of the IEEE.
