Wednesday and Thursday, April 28 and 29
Organizing Committee: Carl M. Lampert, Star Science; Ric Shimshock, MLD Technologies LLC; Claes G. Granqvist, Uppsala University, Sweden; Ludvik Martinu, École Polytechnique, Canada; Peter Martin, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory.
This symposium focuses on new and emerging functional materials and coatings with unique intelligent properties as indicators, protective coatings, early warning of tampering, aging, biological and chemical change. The intent of our Symposium is to bring together many specialists working on active and intelligent materials. We see smart materials as a growing area for new products. Examples of smart materials are smart switchable glass and plastic for use in visors, architectural and automotive glazing. These coatings can be used for dynamic energy and light control. Some technologies can switch in the infrared wavelengths. Other materials include switchable polymers, smart ink and dynamic labeling. Also, Included in this group are highly refined evacuated glazing, which can be used for both energy and acoustical control. Other developing areas concern health applications such as drug delivery systems from multilayer patches and food safety packaging. We feel this mixture of technology will broaden the future of coating technology.
